A review by Julie Moncton
OK, if you are still reading this, then you have read Halfway to the Grave and can't wait to find out
what will happen to Cat and Bones. In the first book, Catherine Crawfield, half human and half vampire, has
joined forces with her lover, Bones, to search and destroy evil vampires that prey on humans. Bones is more
than a drop dead (pun intended) gorgeous boyfriend. He is a master vampire who has been undead for hundreds
of years and has some interesting and surprising vampire tricks up his fangs. At the end of book one, Cat had
accepted an offer to join a secret government task force whose mission was to rid the world of the rogue
undead. As part of her new role, Cat had to leave behind not only her home, but also her lover,
Bones. Although Cat's passion for Bones had not diminished, the offer promised protection for Cat and her
mother as well as an end to the hunt for Bones.
At the start of One Foot in the Grave, four years have passed and Cat is leading a crack team of
recruits who track down and eliminate vampires. The team is a first-class vampire killing machine whose physical
skills are finely honed with a brutal training regimen and a touch of vampire blood infusions to give them an
extra bit of supernatural boost. Cat even earns the nickname, "The Red Reaper" among the undead, with some
big rewards for her capture or death. Although Cat's career is skyrocketing, her love life is another
story. She has never found anyone who comes close to replacing Bones in her heart.
But Cat is in for a big surprise. While walking down the aisle as a bridesmaid for her best friend's
wedding, Cat glances up to see that one of the groom's men is -- you guessed it -- Bones. The romance quickly
rekindles and Cat and Bones become the sizzling duo they once were. But it's not all hot and steamy bedroom
scenes (although there are plenty in this book), because someone very powerful in the underworld wants to
add Cat to his vampire clan and is pulling out all the stops to try and capture her. Not only does Cat
need Bones for his skills as a master vampire, Bones must team up with allies to try and track down this new threat.
If you are looking for a fun audiobook in the paranormal genre, then One Foot in the Grave is a
perfect choice. The action is fast-paced and the dialogue is snappy. For people interested in learning more
about vampire lore and history, Jeaniene Frost has created an elaborate undead society that she enticingly
reveals in each of her Night Huntress books. Tavia Gilbert's narration is superb and she
easily handles the challenge of a wide cast of character voices and accents (vampires being such a global
community). This is an audiobook that you will not want to put down.
Julie Moncton is one of the owners of an audio book store in San Jose, California -- a good thing since it keeps her well stocked in books to both read and listen to. You can see what books are on her shelf (or iPod) on her goodreads page. |
