New Arrivals
compiled by Neil Walsh

This is the list of books recently received in the SF Site office. Highlights include the latest novel from Jon Courtenay Grimwood, a new collection from Ian Watson, classic reprints from the likes of Clark Ashton Smith and Arthur C. Clarke, and advance reading copies all over the map!

And in case anyone's curious about what I've been reading lately, fiction titles have included:

  • The Moment of Eclipse, short stories by Brian Aldiss (first published in 1970, reprinted in 2000 by House of Stratus, UK). I picked this up on the recommendation of Fantastic Metropolis mastermind Gabriel Chouinard, and was not disappointed. Some excellent stuff in here, still relevant 30 years on. Some very cool images that will probably never leave me. Recommended reading.
  • Choke by Chuck Palahniuk (Doubleday, USA, 2001). This is the author responsible for Fight Club, which was a brilliant movie that I almost didn't see because it didn't look at all interesting to me but turned out to be nothing like what I was expecting. Choke is likewise clever and twisted and not quite what you're expecting -- whatever that may be. If you liked Fight Club (novel or movie) you should enjoy Choke. Nothing to do with SF; it's just a good book I read recently. Thought you might like to know about it.
  • Shadows Bend by David Barbour and Richard Raleigh (Ace, October 2000, USA). A story of eldritch horror, starring H.P. Lovecraft, Robert E. Howard and Clark Ashton Smith. I really wanted this to be a good book. It wasn't. I suppose it could be fun if you read it in the right spirit, but Barbour & Raleigh just didn't measure up to the writers they were trying to emulate.
  • King Rat by China Miéville (Tor, 2000, USA - previously published by in the UK by Macmillan, 1998). This was the first novel by the author of the utterly brilliant Perdido Street Station (2000). King Rat is a good book, and an exceptionally good first novel. But it's not utterly brilliant. You can see the progression, which makes me very excited about his forthcoming third novel. But I think New Crobuzon is infinitely richer than the London setting of King Rat.

Enough about my reading. On to the books... (Books are listed alphabetically by author. Only books received are noted.)
