New Arrivals
compiled by Neil Walsh

The month of July brought to the SF Site offices a tottering stack of great new and forthcoming books. Some of the highlights include new novels from James Barclay, Alice Borchardt, Raymond E. Feist & Steve Stirling, and Geoffrey Huntington, plus forthcoming books from Harry Turtledove, Judith Tarr, Norman Spinrad, Terry Pratchett, David Langford, and Orson Scott Card.

As for me, here's what I've been reading:

  • Cities edited by Peter Crowther (Victor Gollancz, hc, 292 pages, published April 2003, UK)
The fourth "foursight" anthology from Peter Crowther features four complete novellas: A Year in the Linear City by Paul di Filippo is an excellent story and a very cool city. The Tain by China Miéville is likewise a great story, also a bit sedate and not quite what you might have expected. The city here is London, post invasion (from an entirely unexpected quarter). Firing the Cathedral, A Jerry Cornelius Story by Michael Moorcock went right past me. I have no idea what this story was about. Maybe I haven't read enough previous Jerry Cornelius material. The highlight of the collection is V.A.O. by Geoff Ryman. It's a story about some really old folks in a home, trying to assert their independence while at the same time trying to hide it, not to mention solving a sort of mystery. V.A.O., by the way, stands for both Victim-Activated Ordnance, and Very Ancient Offenders.
  • A Circle of Cats by Charles de Lint, illustrated by Charles Vess (Viking, hc, 45 pages, published 2003, USA & Canada)
This is a picture book with a target audience of readers aged 8 and older. As with all the best children's books, the story is direct but not at all condescending. As with all the best picture books, the artwork complements the story without at all distracting from it. And, as with all the best of de Lint's work, the story itself is charming and magical. It's also a prequel to last year's Seven Wild Sisters (also illustrated by Vess), so fans will no doubt want to know some of the early history of Aunt Lillian.

(Books are listed alphabetically by author. Only books received are noted.)
