New Arrivals
compiled by Neil Walsh

New novels from Terry Brooks, Sara Douglass, Stephen Baxter; new collections from Cory Doctorow, Michael Swanwick, Thomas F. Monteleone; new anthologies from Ellen Datlow & Terri Windling, Claude Lalumière, Sheree R. Thomas -- these are some of the new and forthcoming books to flow through the SF Site office this month.

But first, from my own recent reading, here are a couple of books I recommend very highly:

  • Diary: A Novel by Chuck Palahniuk (Doubleday, hc, 256 pages, published September 2003, USA & Canada)
If you're a fan of anything Palahniuk has ever written (Fight Club, for example, or Lullaby or maybe Choke -- those are the ones I've read, and they're all good) then you must read this. And if you're going to read this, do it soon, before anyone tells you anything about it. Don't even read the back cover. Trust me. You may feel lost at first, but you're clever; you'll pick up the story as you go along -- and it'll be worth your while.
  • Meet Me in the Moon Room by Ray Vukcevich (Small Beer Press, trade, 256 pages, published 2001, USA & Canada)
Wow. I finally picked up a copy of this the other day, and... wow. What an absolutely stunning collection. The stories here are all very short, varying in degrees of surreality, humour, fun and/or creepiness. But, with only a few exceptions, these stories really pack a punch. In the short fiction medium, Vukcevich is utterly genius.
