New Arrivals
compiled by Neil Walsh

This month's batch of books at the SF Site office includes new novels from Ian Watson, David Zindell, Robert J. Sawyer; new anthologies from Robert Silverberg, Michael Reaves & John Pelan; and a new collection of essays from SF Site columnist Rick Klaw.

But before we get to all that, let me tell you about what I've been reading lately:

  • Felaheen: The Third Arabesk by Jon Courtenay Grimwood (Earthlight, hc, 357 pages, published July 2003, UK & Canada)
This book clears up some of the questions left unanswered in the first two volumes of the series -- but not right away. At some point about halfway through this one, I was wondering what the heck was going on. Don't mistake my meaning: I was having fun, but I just wasn't sure where we were going. But when we finally got there, man was it worth it. Nothing like a good alternate-future action-adventure murder-mystery!

  • Beyond This Dark House by Guy Gavriel Kay (Penguin Canada, hc, 107 pages, published April 2003, Canada)
The poetry in this collection is not challenging to read; there is always some kind of logical structure here, even where there is no conventional structure. It's also a nice mix of some very personal material and some entirely speculative poetry. Subjectively speaking, there were only a couple of Kay's poems that reached out and touched me. I think the best is the first, "Night Drive: Elegy," because it feels so soul-baringly honest. Not a collection to shake the foundations of modern poetry, but worth a look if you want to feel closer to the author behind such excellent novels as The Sarantine Mosaic, The Lions of Al-Rassan, Tigana, and others.

Some evidence of her mightiest cities still remains, but these are nothing more than scattered ruins haunted by restless ghosts. The barren wasteland that fills her borders has slept undisturbed for decades. But an age of fear is ending, and the Archaists are coming now to delve into her secrets. They are crossing oceans and braving deserts to seek the truth of what enemy sank an entire empire beneath an ocean of sand. The answer is buried at Gideon's Wall."
