New Arrivals
compiled by Neil Walsh

This holiday season we're looking at new books from Dale Bailey, Orson Scott Card, Robin Hobb, Lois McMaster Bujold, Mary Gentle, Kage Baker, Gwyneth Jones, Alastair Reynolds, Neal Stephenson, and many more; plus previously unpublished works from Lord Dunsany and Robert A. Heinlein; and no less than 3 new magazines, along with new issues from several others.

But first, here are two recommendations from my own recent reading:

  • The Thackery T. Lambshead Pocket Guide to Eccentric & Discredited Diseases edited by Jeff VanderMeer & Mark Roberts (Night Shade Books, hc, 298 pages, November 2003, USA)
This book is quite the editorial coup; it's a brilliant concept from start to finish. However, with contributions from the likes of China Miéville, Paul Di Filippo, Jeffrey Ford, Neil Gaiman, Steve Aylett, and many more equally creative minds, you can't help but want this to be even more enjoyable than it is. There are countless seeds of larger fictions within these pages, just begging for further development and exploration. This is a collection of ideas, rather than a collection of stories. Even so, it's quite a treat -- heck, even some of the contributor bios had me laughing out loud.

  • Gideon's Wall by Greg Kurzawa (Riptide Press, trade, 315 pages, September 2003, USA & Canada)
Shallai was a mighty empire that covered a vast expanse of territory, until one day it mysteriously disappeared. No one survived to explain how such a thing could happen. Ultimately, this novel is as enigmatic as the mystery it purports to recount: at times frustrating, at times wonderful. Gideon's Wall is, in many ways, an impressive first novel.
