New Arrivals
compiled by Neil Walsh

Recent arrivals to the SF Site office include the first poetry collection from Orson Scott Card, and many new and forthcoming books from the likes of Charles Stross, Robert Silverberg, Laurie J. Marks, Joe R. Lansdale, Cory Doctorow, Peter Crowther, and many more.

My own reading in recent weeks has been rather diverse. Here are a couple of highlights I can recommend:

  • Cheap Complex Devices edited by John Compton Sundman (Rosalita Associates, trade, 180 pages, August 2002, USA)
This fascinating little book is a fiction in 3 parts: the first two, the "Forward" by Sundman and "Notes on the Source Code" by the Hofstader Competition Committee, set the stage for what follows, by establishing the fiction of the competition for machine-generated prose fiction. "Bees, or the Floating Point Error" is alleged to be the only surviving entry, as explained in the previous sections. The whole work hangs together surprisingly well, and "Bees" is actually an exceedingly clever story, written by a colony of bees that sometimes believes itself to be a human being. Or maybe it was written by a computer. Or a man. All the same thing, really.

  • Galápagos by Kurt Vonnegut (Delta, trade, 336 pages, January 1999; first published in 1985)
This is another classic Vonnegut end-of-humanity story, this time told from the perspective of a million-year-old ghost. Like any good Vonnegut novel, it is compellingly written, with a witty blend of sparkling humour and caustic satire. None of the characters in this novel are particularly likeable, but they're all so utterly human that you can't help but want to follow their stories through to the bitter end.
