New Arrivals
compiled by Neil Walsh

Some of the New Arrivals here in the SF Site office include the latest from Gene Wolfe, M. John Harrison, Charles Stross, Laurell K. Hamilton, Dan Abnett, Brian Lumley, L.E. Modesitt, Jr., plus advance peeks at the latest from Glen Cook, Harry Turtledove, Hal Duncan, and much more besides.

Before we get to those, I want to take a moment to recommend a couple of books I've recently read:

  • Three Days to Never by Tim Powers (Subterranean Press, hc, 344 pages, May 2006, USA; also available from William Morrow, hc, 420 pages, August 2006, USA)
Frank Marrity and his 12-year-old daughter Daphne have developed a limited telepathy with each other. Marrity's grandmother who raised him disappears under mysterious circumstances and later turns up dead, several hundred miles away. Suddenly covert organizations are trying to find out something from Marrity and his daughter that they don't know. Everyone is interested in something in grandma's shed, but no one knows quite what. This book has everything from Einstein to action-adventure, buried treasure to lucid dreaming espionage, time travel to Charlie Chaplin. This novel is a head-spinner for sure -- Tim Powers is in finest form.
  • Ship of Fools by Richard Paul Russo (Ace, mm, 370 pages, January 2002, USA & Canada)
I no longer recall when or even how this book slipped into my collection, but damn what a good read! It's the story of a starship travelling through the galaxy for so many generations that no one remembers what their original mission was. Now they wander, without any real agenda, other than to keep going. However, the class system that has evolved on the starship is breeding resentment against the elite. After centuries without any outside contact, excitement is stirred when they begin to receive a regular signal from a habitable planet orbiting a nearby star. Excitement turns to horror at what they discover. Then a new discovery engenders mixed reactions. It's hard to say too much more without spoiling the surprises, which are part of what makes this such a terrific book. I highly recommend this one.
