Just picked up a battered, n-th hand copy of Science Fiction Art, compiled and introduced by Brian Aldiss, for £3.99 at the Oxfam shop. Some fine stuff in there - and I can now see where some of the artwork in Promethea came from ...

When Ted White edited Amazing Stories, he tried the experiment of having good art on the covers. I guess it failed, because the golden age of science fiction art is far behind us, and having good art on the cover seems not to have occurred to modern publishers.
