Short story title, please!!

In an anthology (not Universe) I read a story where a single species disappears/goes extinct every day. The end of the story has some seemingly small and insignificant species dying out and the next day it is the human species which goes the way of the Passenger Pigeon. Can anyone help me with the title, author and antholgy volume this was in?

I read this somewhere in the '70's-'80's.

I remember the story, but not title or author. Maybe Damon Knight? That's just a guess.
