Many years ago I read a SF book. Story involved planet colonization by
humans. Planet had a fish "salmon" or variant on word that was main food
source. Also had a predator. Humans built fortifications to protect from
latter. Had pools or streams with fish inside their fortification. At some
point it dawns on reader that fish and predator are same animal at different
parts of its life cycle.
Would you or any of your team know this book title?

This sounds kind of like Speaker for the Dead, the first sequel to Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card.

I think it is Grendel by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle. The sequel was The Legacy of Heroit.

Grendel was also published as The Dragons of Heorot.
