Story about endlessly cruising passenger aircraft

Hi,

I'm looking for a (short?) story I read quite some time ago, where a future global transportation system is in place with huge carrier aircraft following their routes along the major cities but never landing. The passengers are brought on board and leave for their destinations via shuttle aircraft, also fuel and cargo is brought by the shuttle aircraft. During docking of one of these shuttles with a carrier an accident happens. However, I neither remember the development of the story nor the author.

Any ideas?
