A very vague memory

[One-track minded]

Can anyone help with the name of this book? What I remember most clearly is a kid, in his garage, testing the limits of his developing power (TK I think. I think he tries to lift the car and it is beyond his strength) I remember that he writes down in a notebook his 'discoveries' about his powers as he experiments. Later in the book, "they" find his notebook and know what he is capable of.

It's not a lot to go on, I know. There are vague memories of people leaving a video camera running where he's going to show up (teleport?) and something that gasses the room when he appears. Other than that, I've got nothing.
