telepathic rock

I remember a story I read many years ago about a telepathic rock on a far-away planet. The people were traveling through space, without a spaceship (as they were very advanced in space travel), when suddenly they sense a strong telepathic presence. Then a voice says "Welcome thinkers" and commences to talk to them. I don't remember the story after that.....I think it was a short story, but am not sure.
