Telescope with infinite magnification

Many years ago I read a short story about a scientist building a telescope - he spent an inordinate amount of time grinding the lenses and when eventually it was complete, the telescope was able to magnify sufficiently to see lifeforms on distant planets.

Does this ring any bells with anyone?
