man with explosive implant

I read this pulpy novel when I was a kid and have never seen it since. The central character was some sort of dissident who was captured by the state and had an explosive device implanted into his body. He somehow escaped and managed to get the thing removed with the aid of an Australian Aborigine who had psychokinetic powers. Will be astonished if anyone knows it.
