"Waiting for the Poker to come through."

As a kid about 1960 I read a short story that involved a scientist finding/making a small sphere that had a hole in it. When he looked in it he saw a miniature globe or model of the earth. He showed it to his buddy and they passed it back and forth. Then he looked and it blew up. He grabbed a fireplace poker and jammed it down into the hole. A day or two later an eye appeared in the sky, then an eye of a different color appeared and back and forth. Then a govenment fired missles at it. They figured out they had been the eyes and wondered what would happen to the earth when they attacked it with the poker The last line of the story was: " They sat waiting for the poker to come through." or something like that. Can anyone help?
