60s space exploration story

Hi All,

I'm looking for a book I read as a kid, so it is probably a 50s or 60s classic. It was about a spaceship exploring the galaxy, but the only event I remember is that when they returned to earth the ship went through it (the earth). I had it in my mind that it was the Voyage of the Space Beagle, by A.E. Van Vogt, but it was not.

Any thoughts?
