Sheer Speculation Press: call for submissions

Postby JBDryden » Wed Jun 18, 2008 3:46 pm

Sheer Speculation Press is looking for short stories. It's two publications, Staffs & Starships Magazine and Loki's Journal are both open to unsolicited submissions. Here are the guidelines for the two publications.

Staffs & Starships Magazine is looking for short fiction in the speculative fiction genres.

Here's what we want:

1. Fiction of literary quality that leans towards the traditional
* No space opera, no cyberpunk, no urban fantasy
* No horror, supernatural, psychological thriller
2. Fiction with strong characters and sound plots
3. Fiction that raises a question - whether explicit or implicit

Please keep stories under 3500 words or query for longer pieces over 4000 words.

Please have a look at Submission Guidelines ( ... guidelines) for full details.

Loki's Journal is looking for stories between 2,500 and 3,000 words. Some stories slightly over the maximum might be accepted, but they must tell a truly spectacular story that compels us to print it. Shorter stories are more likely to get looked at first.

Loki's Journal is looking for stories that fit outside the boundaries of the ordinary or the commonplace. Look at our site for our definitions of the four kinds of stories we're really interested in: Adult Fairy-tales, Dark Fantastic, Insolative, and Magic Realism.

Here are some of the elements that a good story might have:

* Gritty (but not necessarily to the point of noir or cyberpunk).
* Believable or plausible settings - given the genres. Nothing too far out that throws the reader out of the world.
* Identifiable mythic or fantasy elements.
* Focused on interaction between individual characters rather than between entire tribes, cultures or worlds.
* Breaks the conventions of the three main spec genres (fantasy, sci fi, horror) or blends them believably.
* Clear, plot driven story structure.
* Something that breaks traditions in a good way.
* Magic realism used in a way that enhances the story.
* Stories that involve magic in a much more realistic way than traditional genre fiction.

Please have a look at Submission Guidelines ( ... guidelines) for full details.

I've found that a new market needs to say up front if it is a paying market.
