The novel I am working on draws heavily on religion. Not so much the spirituality - although that will be a part - but more of the geopolitics of religion.

What do members think of this?

Sf novels with religious themes are often popular. A Case of Conscience by James Blish, A Canticle for Leibowitz by Walter Miller, Jr., Childhood's End by Arthur C. Clarke, and many more.

But this is not so much religious as it is politico-religious or religio-political if you prefer.

The villain of the novel is a leader using religion for political reasons.

The politico using religion for selfish motives is something of a cliche, though goodness knows if you want to write a best-seller, cliche all the way is your best bet.

Yes I would like to write a best seller. As far as demagogues using religion for selfish reasons - that is just plain ole real life
