Have The City & The City near the bottom of Mount TBR otherwise all the other writings are new to me.

Might be an interesting battle if Long Form drama.

They might as well just give the best novel Hugo to The City and the City now, though I doubt that I'll read it, having been unable to get into Perdido Street Station. Another much Hugoed writer I can't stand is Charles Stross. Stories about unpleasant people doing incomprehensible things seem to be popular.

I'm sure Avatar will win best drama long form, though I'll be voting for Star Trek, and for Dollhouse on the short form.

If you aren't sure who to vote for in the fanzine category, let me recommend Challenger by my old buddy Guy Lillian, who has been wanting a Hugo for as long as he's been alive. (He came from the womb crying for a Hugo for best new baby.)

OK: what's the difference between a "novella" and a "novelette"? And why isn't there an award for Best Website?

The category used to be "novelette" but there were so many good novelettes that they split the category, with novelettes being the shorter and novellas being the longer. The same thing happend with dramatic presentation.

I rember one year when a novel won the best novelette award. Hothouse, by Brian Aldis, was published as five novelettes, and all five were on the Hugo ballot, and nothing else was in that category. So the convention just gave the novelette award to Hothouse.

Not much I've read there, apart from City and Neil Gaiman's Batman story, which I loved. I hope Moon will prevail over Avatar. And it seems a tad unfair that "fan writers" are up against Frederick Pohl ...

It is unfair, but Fred Pohl was a fan before he was a pro.

Thanks for posting. I have not read any of the winners, but I will read them, since I read all Hugo winners (even ones by authors I hate a lot). How long will I keep that up? Only time will tell.

I was sorry Moon won. It was admirable. Avatar not so much so. But Avatar was a hell of a lot more fun. The "director's cut", with nine extra minutes, is better than the first version.
