Uptime, downtime

This is the place to ask about that story you remember so well -- but can't remember the title and author.

Uptime, downtime

Postby ghostguy » Tue Aug 16, 2011 10:37 am

Trying to recall the title and author of a time travel story that uses the terms "uptime/downtime" to indicate past/future (not sure which was which). The protagonist was able to travel in either direction with equal ease. One attribute of future time travel was that the environment got visually thinner, i.e., lacking in solidity, the further into the future the protagonist went. This story was written no later than 1970. Thanks for your help.

Sounds like Poul Anderson's Time Patrol series. I know they've done reprints and such but the first four or five books were written in the 50's and 60's.

There is a new anthology coming out honoring Poul Anderson, with a new Time Patrol story by Robert Silverberg.
