Cat Women of the Moon

Postby Brightonian » Sun Aug 28, 2011 5:56 am

This BBC Radio 4 documentary has borrowed the title of a 1950s movie and looks at "how science fiction has been used to examine relationships between the sexes - and in some cases, more than two sexes" with contributions from "some of Britain's leading science fiction writers including Iain Banks, China Mieville and Nicola Griffith". To be broadcast in two parts starting 11.30 am local time, Tuesday August 30th. Read more at http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b013q20k.

First episode was moderately interesting - didn't mention The Left Hand of Darkness which was the first relevant title I thought of, but on the other hand there was a name check for The Blazing World by Margaret Cavendish, which some of us only know of via Alan Moore's League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. You can hear it at the above link, and the second and concluding part is next Tuesday - same bat-time, same bat-channel.

Well, from your first post, it sounds like they're focusing on British writers. LeGuin's not British, right?

Thanks, I know she's not British.

They did indeed mostly interview British writers, presumably for budgetary reasons, but that doesn't seem a good reason to exclude discussion of foreign authors.
