Throughout most of history, almost everybody was a farmer, almost all women of child bearing age were pregnant almost all the time, everybody including small children were drunk almost all the time because the water wasn't safe to drink, almost everybody including kings and queens had several of their children die, the life expectancy was under fifty and doctors usually did more harm than good, a few people had more riches than they knew what to do with and the vast majority of people lived on the edge of starvation, and there were either a very few mathematicians or else none at all.
