Am I mistaken, or is cover artist Dan Clowes (of Eightball and Ghost World fame) here channeling Mel Hunter?

I always heard that F&SF was the New Yorker of science fiction, but now I am starting to wonder whether the New Yorker might not be the F&SF of mainstream.

I enjoyed "Like a Velvet Glove Cast in Iron" best.

The cover of THE TEN CENT PLAGUE: The Comic Book Scare and How it Changed America, by David Hajdu, Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2008, shows a kid of about fourteen in bed looking at comic books, including one called Weird Mysteries. The name of the comic book uses Weird Tales' historic logo on the word "Weird". There's no reason for the artist to do that, is there?

The book portrays a subculture where peoples' lives are devoted to comics interests.

    Sam---

Y'know, I didn't connect Clowes's cover specifically with a Mel Hunter cover like this one, http://sfcovers.net/Magazines/FSF/FSF_0074.jpg , but I take your point.

Overall, I have to say that Françoise Mouly has done an extraordinary job with the NEW YORKER covers over the past decade. If she or her artists find any inspiration in F&SF covers, I say, more power to her.

    Gordon,

I guess he's channeling both Mel Hunter and Nicholson Baker.

Roger dat on F. Mouly, but I'd still like to see more Gretchen Dow Simpson.

    Holy crap,

Asimov, Ellison, Sturgeon and Frank Herbert all in the same issue? What was that? A 'best of'?

They don't make 'em like that anymore, no offense.
