I am trying to remember a short story published in either Asimov’s, Fantasy & Science Fiction or Analog, at least 10 years ago.

The story is about an older guy who works as a EMT (emergency medical) type individual and he gets a younger woman or almost girl on his night shift to work with him.

He starts to feel close to this girl, he feels he should protect her from the “evils and realities" of the work of finding the sick and determining what should be done to or for them.

At the end of the story, they had found a individual who needed medical care, but due to the fact that this individual had been a smoker – treatment was going to be withheld, the girl ends the individual’s life by cutting his throat and explaining it to the older guy by saying “ they told us in training that you older guys might be squimish about what needs to be done."

Does anyone remember this story, the name and author

    Thanks – M. Cleary

    Moira-

Something sounds (very) vaguely familiar here. I think it may have been in Analog, and probably more like 15-20 years ago but I can't tell you any more than that-

tiger: Yeah, I don't recognize the story, but I thought that it sounded like a Probability Zero piece with a slight play on words in the title, something like "Harsh Reality" or "Emergency Treatment". Doesn't mean it couldn't be a F&SF or Asimovs story, but I'd also post the question over on the Analog forum.

    Here's another story ID query:

When I was about 12 [1967] I read a story about a 'doggie' type alien that was in a world where 'people' had varying degrees of esp [mind reading] ability and the character could adjust the level up to 15? that other could see in him, It was the first science fiction story I had read. I was in a public library and had to leave. I have never been able to find it since.

    Another query:

i came across an issue from 1981 as i was cleaning out my books. i remember reading a story in the early 80's about scientists doing a DNA test on the Shroud of Turin (i think). anyway, the story essentially was testing Jesus' DNA & finding out there were aberrations. does this ring a bell for anyone?

All I can think of is a more recent story by Matt Hughes and I'm sure that's not the one they're looking for. ---GVG

There's a story in v. 101 (1981) of Analog about Turin and peptides and such. I don't have a physical copy, so I can't tell you the title, per se. http://books.google.com/books?id=Gc5ZAAAAMAAJ&source=gbs_navlinks_s

According to what I can tell, it was this issue: http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?ANLGJAN81

    Hi:

Aethercowboy gave me enough clues to find the story. The story actually appeared in the March 2nd, 1981 issue of Analog (they published 13 issues per year at that time). The story was "The Shroud" by Michael McCollum. It looks like the story is available for free download at this site:

The person who was looking for "The Shroud" says thanks---that was the story she was after.
