Obituary: Bob Guccione

Publisher Bob Guccione (b.1930) died on October 20. Guccione is best known for founding Penthouse magazine and his funding for the 1979 film Caligula, but in the science fiction world he will be best remembered for founding Omni Magazine (and later Omni Online), which ran plenty of original science fiction under the editorships of Ben Bova, Robert Sheckley, and Ellen Datlow.

Bob Sheckley was the editor of Omni (not Ben Bova). Ellen Datlow was originally his Assistant Editor, later rising to fame when Bob ran away with Jay to Florida (where he wrote “Dramocles”).

Bova was originally hired as Omni’s fiction editor. When first editor Frank Kendig left the magazine in 78 or 79, Bova was promoted to editor and Sheckley was brought on as fiction editor. Bova left Omni in 1981, as did Sheckley, with Datlow taking over as fiction editor.
