Cordwainer Smith Rediscovery Award

The winner of the 2013 Cordwainer Smith Rediscovery Award was announced at Readercon. The award seeks to recognize and draw attention to lesser-known fantasy or science fiction authors. This year’s award went to Wyman Guin, a pseudonym for Norman Menasco. Guin (1915-1989) began publishing in 1950 and published eight short stories and a novel over the span of his career. He is, perhaps, best known for the novella “Beyond Bedlam” and the novelette “Volpla.”

Shirley Jackson Award Winners

The Shirley Jackson Award winners were announced at Readercon on July 14. The Shirley Jackson Awards were established to recognize outstanding achievement in the literature of psychological suspense, horror, and the dark fantastic.

Ender’s Game Benefit for LGBT Groups

Lionsgate has announced that it will host a premiere of the film Ender’s Game as a benefit event for LGBT support groups. The announcement comes after the book’s author, Orson Scott Card, wrote a call for people to be tolerant of his anti-LGBT views and activities in support of the National Organization for Marriage (NOM). LGBT groups have been calling for a boycott of the film due to Card’s outspoken activism and his position as a board member of NOM.

Obituary: Cory Montieth

Actor Cory Montieth (b.1982) was found dead in his hotel room on July 13. Montieth, who was best known for his role as Finn Hudson on Glee also appeared in several genre films and television series, including Final Destination 3, Smallville, two of the Stargate series, Kyle XY, and Flash Gordan.

Obituary: Gokulananda Mahapatra

Indian author Gokulananda Mahapatra (b.1926) died on July 10. Holding a Masters of Science degree, Mahapatra wrote popular science books as well as science fiction novels and short stories in the Oriya language. His science writing won him the Kalinga Prize in 2010. Some of his science fiction included the novels Pruthibi bahare manisa, Nishabda Godhuli, and Mrutyu rashmi.

Endeavour Nominees

The nominees for the Endeavour Award have been announced. The award is annually given to a novel or single-author collection written by an author with ties to the Pacific Northwest. The judges for the award are Noreen Doyle, Susan Forest, and John Scalzi. The winner will be announced on November 8, 2013 at OryCon35 in Portland OR.

Frenkel No Longer at Tor

Patrick Nielsen Hayden announced via Twitter that long time editor James Frenkel is no longer working for Tor Books. According to Nielsen Hayden, works which had been assigned to Frenkel will be redistributed to other editors at Tor Books, but anything which had been submitted to Frenkel and not accepted should be resubmitted to Tor.

Davis Birthday Reading

Grania Davis will be reading and signing her book Tree of Life, Book of Death: The Treasures of Grania Davis at Borderlands Books and Cafe in San Francisco on July 21 from 4-6pm to celebrate her 70th birthday.
