Changes at Strange Horizons

Following the announcement in December that Karen Meisner was leaving the fiction department at Strange Horizons, fiction editor Susan Marie Groppi, who has held that post for more than a decade, has announced that she will be stepping down, although retaining an advisory role. The magazine is currently looking for a new fiction editor, and will be temporarily closed to submissions.

Changes at Tangent Online

Dave Truesdale has announced that both on-line fiction Managing Editor Kevin Tipple and Assistant Managing Editor Steve Fahnestalk have stepped down from their positions at Tangent Online, which reviews short SF/F. Joseph Giddings has been named the new Assistant Managing Editor. Fahnestalk has stepped down to focus on his writing career and Tipple is stepping down for health reasons. Both editors stayed in their positions until Truesdale returned to the on-line world to ensure the smooth continuation of Tangent Online.

Gollancz Seeks Editor

Abdalati Named Chief NASA Scientist

Waleed Abdalati has been named Chief Scientist at NASA by NASA Administrator Charles Borden. Abdalati will assume his new position on January 3, 2011. Currently the director of the Earth Science and Observation Center at the University of Colorado at Boulder, Abdalati will serve as the principal adviser to the NASA administrator on agency science programs, strategic planning and the evaluation of related investments. Previously, Abdalati was head of the Cryospheric Sciences Branch at the agency’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD.

Laura Haywood-Cory has been promoted to Associate Editor at Baen Books. Haywood-Cory has previously served as an editorial assistant at Baen and has long been active in science fiction fandom and con-running.

Science Fiction World Editorial Change

Li Chang, the editor of Science Fiction World, the largest circulation sf magazine in the world, has been removed from his post. Li’s removal comes after many months of complaints about his practices and he is being replaced, temporarily, by Liu Shucheng, the vice president of SFW. Li was described in an open letter signed by numerous editors as unprofessional, arbitrary, and impracticable.

Hall Retires

Hal Hall, who has served as curator of the Science Fiction and Fanzine collection at Texas A&M since 1978 retired on August 30. Hall built the collection to more than 46,000 items. He will be succeeded by Catherine Coke, who is also an SF fan.

Orbit Seeking Deputy Publisher/Editorial Assistant

Orbit Books is looking to hire a Deputy Publisher and Editorial Assistant. The Deputy Publisher will be responsible for implementing publishing plans, have excellent judgement, be a great communicator, and embrace change in the publishing industry and market-place. Tor Seeking Interns

Changes at Weird Tales

Ann VanderMeer has been promoted to the position of Editor-in-Chief of Weird Tales. Stephen Segal is stepping away from day-to-day operations, but will remain the magazine’s senior contributing editor. VanderMeer and Segal shared a best editor Hugo last year for their work on the magazine. Mary Robinette Kowal has joined Weird Tales as their art director and Paula Guran has been named non-fiction editor for the magazine.

Cohen Named Editor

Douglas Cohen has been named editor at Realms of Fantasy. Cohen has served the magazine as a slush reader, assistant editor, non-fiction editor, and art director. This promotion consolidates his titles. Shawna McCarthy, who has been the magazine’s editor since the first issue will retain her role at the magazine.

Newton Heads DC

Warner Brothers has announced that Diane Newton will take the newly created position as head of DC Entertainment. The creation of DC Entertainment is to better manage the DC library of characters for Warner Brothers. Newton has previously overseen the Harry Potter franchise. DC President Paul Levitz will step down from his position to become a writer, contributing editor and consultant to DC Entertainment.

SFM Gets New Director

Christina Orr-Cahall has been named the new CEO and Director of the Experience Music Project/Science Fiction Museum in Seattle, Washington. Orr-Cahall replaces interim CEO Josi Callan. Orr-Cahall comes to the museum from the Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach, FL, where she held a similar position. When Orr-Cahall took over the Norton Museum nineteen years ago, it had 16 employees and is now considered a major regional museum. She is expected to begin at the EMP/SFM on July 1.
