The Munsey, previously named for nineteenth century publisher Frank Munsey, has been presented for efforts and ongoing involvement in the improvement, elevation, and continuance of keeping the pulps alive and well. In the future, the Award will be known as the Rusty Hevelin Service Award, after the fan who helped found Pulpfest, and who died in December. The first Rusty Hevelin Service Award will be presented at this year’s Pulpfest in Columbus, Ohio on the weekend of August 9.

The fund is currently trying to raise $6,000 in an effort to fund its first two years of operation. Unlike traditional fan funds which vote on the recipients of the funds, the World SF Travel Fund has a board which will decide who the fund recipient will be. The board is comprised of Lauren Beukes, Aliette de Bodard, Ekaterina Sedia, Cheryl Morgan, and Lavie Tidhar. The fund hopes to raise enough to bring Philippines fan and editor Charles Tan to the World Fantasy Con in San Diego in October of 2011.

Ashmead worked for several publishers and his authors included Isaac Asimov, Susan Isaacs, Tony Hillerman, and Simon Winchester.

They are asking people to pledge donations based on the length of time the Westboro picket lasts, with the funds raised to go to the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund and the Hero Initiative. A thank you note will be sent to Westboro following the event to let them know how much money their activities raised.

The winner of the contest will be paid for their story (10 cents a word), win a prize pack of books from Subterranean Press, and will have their story published in a special electronic chapbook featuring stories about the painting, written by Scalzi, Wheaton, Catherynne Valente and Patrick Rothfuss, to be published later this year, with profits to benefit the Lupus Foundation of America. The award is a private presentation by Arthur Hlavaty, Bernadette Bosky, and Kevin Maroney.

To qualify for the scholarship, the applicant should:

  • have an interest in race and fantastic literature including science-fiction and/or horror, identify
  • be known as someone who is not white
  • will be 21 or over in March
  • want to actively participate in conference activities/discussions
  • cannot get money from a university to help you attend

The decision will be made by the judges using their our own criteria, including (but far from limited to) any writing you have done that we have seen and if we already know you personally; the decision is not subject to debate.

The deadline is Thursday, November 12.
