First Non-Human Jeopardy! Contestant

The American game show Jeopardy! will feature a series of three games between champion players Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter and an IBM computer, named Watson, from February 14-16, 2011. IBM has been in talks with the show’s producers for two years for the match-up, which IBM sees as a major test for their computer. Before the show’s producers would agree, the computer had to pass the same test human have to take. The purse for the three-day tournament will be $1,000,000, with the entire amount going to charity if Watson wins and 50% going to charity if one of the humans wins.

The Science Fiction Museum in Seattle has announced that it will host an exhibit on Battlestar Galactica in cooperation with Universal Cable Productions and Syfy. The display will open on October 23 and will include props from the recently aired show, including three full sized spaceships and costumes. The exhibit will run through March 4, 2012.

Doctor Who Museum to Close

The Doctor Who Museum in Blackpool, England, is scheduled to close on November 8. First opened in 2004, the museum will remain open from 10:30 am to 8:00 pm every day until then. The museum’s collection of Doctor Who props and costumes will be redistributed to other Doctor Who exhibitions throughout the United Kingdom.

Fan on Jeopardy

In the current Jeopardy! Tournament of Champions, finalist Larissa Kelly is the author of the short story “Engines of Survival,” published in Strange Horizons in December 2008. In Kelly’s previous run, she set an initial five day record, beating the initial five day record set by Ken Jennings, and set a record for the most money won on Jeopardy! by a woman. The finals air on March 23 & 24.

Sci Fi Channel Changes Name

The SciFi Channel has announced plans to change their name to SyFy. The rebranding is an attempt to more fully own the channel’s name, which can’t be done with the current “Sci Fi Channel” name since sci fi is in too widespread use to be trademarked. According to new Sci Fi President Dave Howe, Sci Fi was too limiting and didn’t include fantasy, paranormal, supernatural, action, or superheroes.

Free Torchwood Story Online

To celebrate the second series of Torchwood showing on Watch (Saturdays 9pm), the UKTV channel has teamed up with the official Torchwood magazine to present an exclusive web comic strip, written by the show’s co-producer Brain Minchin.

The story, entitled ‘Ice Monsters’, sees Captain Jack and the Torchwood team battling creatures who have the ability to change the weather.

New Doctor

Matt Smith has been named as the successor to David Tennant on the BBC TV series “Doctor Who.” Smith, who will take up the role in 2010, will be the eleventh actor to play the role in the television series. Smith, born in 1982, made his film debut in 2004 in “Gotham, IL” and has appeared on several television series, including the Billie Piper vehicle “Sally Lockhart.”
