Hydra Winner

Christopher Kastensmidt’s The Elephant and Macaw Banner and Orson Scott Card’s Intergalactic Medicine Show have announced the winner of the Hydra Competition to find the best sf short story published in Brazil during 2011 and 2012. Camila Fernandes’s story “The Other Bank of the River” was selected by Card and translated from Portuguese into English by Kastensmidt. It will appear in Orson Scott Card’s Intergalactic Medicine Show.

The Hans Christian Andersen Prize was presented ti Japanese author Nahoko Uehashi, whose work is based on ancient Japanese mythology and science-fiction fantasy. The award for illustrator was presented to Brazilian artist Roger Mello

Obituary: Al Rio

Brazilian comic book artist Al Rio (b.1962) died on January 30, possibly a suicide. Rio, whose full name was Alvaro Araújo Lourenço do Rio, worked on Gen¹³, Dungeon Siege, X-Men Unlimited, and DV8. his art also appeared on album covers.

Brontops Baruq’s story “História com desenho e diálogo” was selected by Card and translated from Portuguese into English by Kastensmidt. It appears in the current issue of Orson Scott Card’s Intergalactic Medicine Show.

Hydra Competition

Christopher Kastensmidt’s The Elephant and Macaw Banner and Orson Scott Card’s Intergalactic Medicine Show are sponsoring the Hydra Competition to find the best sf short story published in Brazil during 2009 and 2010. The winner, selected by Card, will be translated from Portuguese into English by Kastensmidt for publication in Orson Scott Card’s Intergalactic Medicine Show. The submission period is 1 July through 15 August.
