DeepSouthCon Awards

Two awards were presented at DeepSouthCon 51 (combined with JordanCon) on April 20. The Rebel Award is presented to a fan who has done things for Southern fandom and the Phoenix Award is for an SF professional who has done things for Southern fandom.

  • Rebel Award: Mike Rogers and Regina Kirby
  • Phoenix Award: Robert Jordan

The Rubble Award, for the person doing to most to Southern Fandom, was bestowed upon Atlanta fan Pat Gibbs, who frequently manages DeepSouthCon’s Hearts competition.

DeepSouthCon Awards

Two awards were presented at DeepSouthCon 50 on June 17. The Rebel Award is presented to a fan who has done things for Southern fandom and the Phoenix Award is for an SF professional who has done things for Southern fandom.

  • Rebel Award: John Ringo
  • Phoenix Award: Shelby Vick; and The Zielke Clan: Robert & Becky Zielke and Bill & Linda Zielke

In addition, the Rubble Award was presented to a fan for doing things to Southern fandom. This year’s Rubble Award was presented to Bob Jennings for his work as OE on SFPA.

DeepSouthCon Awards

Two awards were presented by DeepSouthCon at FenCon VIII/DeepSouthCon 49 on September 25. The Rebel Award is presented to a fan who has done things for Southern fandom and the Phoenix Award is for an SF professional who has done things for Southern fandom. This year’s awards were presented by Steven H Silver and Toni Weisskopf.

  • Rebel Award: Brad W. Foster
  • Phoenix Award: Selina Rosen

In addition, the Rubble Award was presented to a fan for doing things to Southern fandom. This year’s Rubble Award was presented to Bill Parker for bringing Worldcon to San Antonio in 2013.

Rebels, Phoenixes, and Rubles

The Rebel Award, Phoenix Award, and the Ruble Award, all presented at DeepSouthCon 47/Hypericon 5 in Nashville. The Rebel and Phoenix Awards are official awards, while the Ruble is an unofficial, but traditional award. The Rebel Award is presented for service to Southern fandom by a fan. the Phoenix is given for support by a pro of Southern fandom and/or professional work reflecting positively on the South, and the Ruble is given for the fan who’s done the most to Southern Fandom.

  • Rebel Award: Randy B. Cleary, ex-president of the Southern Fandom Confederation, ex-editor of the SFC Bulletin, art show runner, etc.
  • Phoenix Award: Robert McCammon, for his horror fiction as well as mentoring many younger authors; and one of the founders of the Horror Writers Association.
  • Ruble Award: Chattacon Registration Department, for (a) botching a new reg system last year resulting in an hours-long registration line then (b) not learning from their mistakes and having an hours-long reg line again this year.
