The Speculative Literature Foundation has announces the application period for our Gulliver Travel Research Grant is open until September 30. The winner for the grant is expected to be announced by November 15, 2014. The Travel Grant is an award of $800 to be used to cover airfare, lodging, and/or other travel expenses incurred during research for a work of fiction.

SLF Offers Diversity Grants

The Speculative Literature Foundation has announced two new grants, the Diverse Writers Grant and the Diverse Worlds Grant. The Diverse Writers Grant is intended to support new and emerging writers from underrepresented and underprivileged groups, including writers of color, women, queer writers, disabled writers, working-class writers, and those whose marginalized identities may present additional obstacles in the writing and/or publishing process. The Diverse Worlds Grant is intended for work that best presents a diverse world, regardless of the writer’s background. Applications for the grants, each of which is for $500, are being accepted through September 15.

The Speculative Literature Foundation has announced the winner of the Gulliver Travel Grant. Daniel Jose Older has received the $800 grant to travel to Cuba to research prisons where Cuban political prisoners were held.

The Speculative Literature Foundation has announced the winner of the Gulliver Travel Grant. Shuchi Saraswat has received the $800 grant to travel to elephant sanctuaries to research the relationship between elephants and their caretakers for her multigenerational novel about a Hindu family.

SLF Extends Application Period

The Speculative Literature Foundation has announced that it will be extending the application period for its Older Writers’ Grant a second time due to an e-mail glitch that caused most of the e-mail received during the original application period to be lost. They are accepting applications through May 31 and invite anyone who previously submitted to resubmit. The winner is expected to be announced on July 15.

Older Writers Grant Applications Lost

The Speculative Literature Foundation has announced that e-mail problems between February 23 and March 8 caused numerous applications and submissions for the SLF Older Writers Grant to bounce. They apologize and invite applicants to resubmit. A grant of $750 is available to any writer of speculative literature older than 50 who is just beginning to work professionally in the field. Applications are due on March 31 with the winner announced on June 1.

Gulliver Travel Grant Awarded

The Speculative Literature Foundation (SLF) has announced the winner of the 2011 Gulliver Travel Grant is Ibi Zoboi. The grant offers Zoboi $800 which she will use to travel to Haiti and the Dominican Republic to research a YA dystopian novel set in both countries.

SLF Older Writer Grant

The Speculative Literature Foundation has announced that Shauna Roberts is the winner of this year’s Older Writers Grant. Roberts attended the 2009 Clarion Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers’ Workshop. The $750 prize is given to help writers who are at least 50 years old and beginning to work at a professional level. The award has been given annually since 2004.

Older Writer Grant Available

The Speculative Literature Foundation’s Grant for Older Authors in open for application through March 31. This grant provides $750 to authors who are fifty years or older. Applicants should send in a short biography, writing sample, and bibliography, if applicable. The grant is intended to assist such writers who are just starting to work at a professional level. The winner will be announced on June 1.
