The Utah in 2014 bid won the right to host Westercon 67 in an unopposed election. The event will take place at the Marriott Downtown at City Creek in Salt Lake City, Utah from July 3-6, 2014. Guests of honor include Cory Doctorow and the team behind the Writing Excuses podcast (Mary Robinette Kowal, Brandon Sanderson, Howard Tayler, and Dan Wells). The chair will be Dave Doering.
After a write-in bid for Granzella’s Inn in
Winters Williams, CA received one more vote that the Portland bid for Westercon 66, the decision of where to hold the Westercon was moved to the Business Meeting, where a 3/4 majority needed to agree on a location. In addition to the Portland bid and the Winters bid, a bid for Utah that was planned for Westercon 67 made a presentation to move up a year and a bid for Maui was also heard. None of the bids met the required threshold and a vote to declare deadlock also failed. On a motion to reconsider the Winters bid, it passed with a vote of 93-27. The con, which still needs to find a location, but likely will be in Sacramento, will be chaired by Kevin Roche and Andrew Trembley.

The South Western Fan Fund has been introduced to help send a representative from the Southern US to Westercon and a Western representative to DeepSouthCon on alternating years. The SWFF is based on existing fan funds and will exist through the donations of fans. This year’s fund will allow a Southern fan to travel to the 2011 Westercon. Candidates should declare by March 1. The current fan fund administrators are Christopher J. Garcia and Warren Buff.
Seattle has won the bid to host Westercon in 2012. The convention, which will be called ConClusion and run from July 5-8, 2012, will be chaired by Bobby DuFault and run by the Seattle Westercon Organizing Committee (SWOC). Guests of Honor include author Robin Hobb, artists Frank and Brianna Spacekat Wu, scientist Art Bozlee, and fan Chaz Baden Boston.
San José has won the right to host Westercon 64 in 2011, receiving 79 of the 93 ballots cast in an uncontested election. The event will take place at the Fairmont Hotel from July 1-4, 2011. Announced guests of honor include Patricia A. McKillip, Phil & Kaja Foglio, and Mike Willmoth.
Pasadena has announced its intention to run a write-in bid to hold the 2010 NASFiC in conjunction with Westercon 64. If they win against Raleigh, which is running an announced bid, the NASFiC will take place the weekend of July 1-4, 2010 at the same time, and with the same facilities as Westercon 64. To vote for Pasadena, write in “Pasadena again in 2010″ on the NASFiC voting ballot. Westercon 64 Chairman Christian B. McGuire notes “We will not campaign! We will not party!We will not take supporting memberships of any sort!”
The ballot for the 2011 Westercon has been released. Any members of Westercon 62 (2009) are eligible to vote, as long as they also pay the $25 voting fee. There is no e-voting and all ballots must be received by mail before June 20 or at the con by 7:30 pm on July 3. Ballots may be hand-delivered at the con by anyone the voter entrusts with their ballot. San Jose is running unopposed for Westercon 64.
