M M by Steven Lee Climer
reviewed by Lisa DuMond
M (Emily) would appear to be a slightly above-average 13-year-old, with a taste for banned exploits. Even she has no inkling of the radical changes that are about to shake up her life. Her life and her ever-loyal best friend Zoey's life, actually. Because M is no ordinary teen; Emily Tyme is a Mapper. Teamed with a Defender and a Keeper, she will search a world unseen by unremarkable eyes for the magical Pieces of the World, to keep them from the dark forces who would use their remarkable powers for sinister purposes.

If you're one of those readers who can't resist trying to solve the mystery before the end, you're going to be second-guessing yourself every few pages. Huron City is supposed to be a peaceful hamlet, a retreat from the dangers and distractions of the big city. That's how it's supposed to operate, but things don't always work out like you hope. Especially when a serial killer is on the loose. Something like that can ruin a good town for everybody. It can also make everyone in town suspect everyone else. Ask Detective Rick Gilroy -- he can hardly decide who to investigate first; all the suspects look so good.

With good use of unusual settings and little-known beliefs to make what could be just another werewolf story into something at once more complex and more elemental, this is not part of the werewolf/erotic wave that crowds the shelves in your favourite bookstore.

Dream Thieves Dream Thieves by Steven Lee Climer

This novel is genuine horror, told in an almost baroque style that occasionally lulls the reader into a false sense of security as the charming Bavarian landscape flows by. And yanks you back with a claw to the throat. At times, the events are so disturbing, pulling away seems the only decent action.
