Close To My Heart: Robert Silverberg's Worlds of Wonder Close To My Heart: Robert Silverberg's Worlds of Wonder edited by Robert Silverberg
a review by Matthew Cheney
What made this book different, and made it the first anthology Matthew would read cover-to-cover, was the power of Silverberg's voice, the authority with which he expressed and justified his opinions, and the excellence of his selection. Thirteen stories are each followed by an essay in which the Silverberg explains why the story is a model of how to write science fiction.

reviewed by Steven H Silver
This anthology brings together aliens and dragons, magic and time travel, all within the framework of the modern fantasy novel. It, as its 1998 precursor, Legends, is an invitation to some of the biggest names in fantasy literature to write novellas in their most famous worlds with an eye to introducing new readers to their works and giving a gift of a new tale to their dedicated readers.

Nebula Awards Showcase 2001 Nebula Awards Showcase 2001 edited by Robert Silverberg

This collection is as accurate -- or inaccurate -- a snapshot of the state of the speculative fiction during one brief moment of time as it is possible to get. It's certainly not perfect, and future volumes would benefit from the elimination of marginal non-fiction in favour of more deserving runners-up. Even so, it remains a collection of top-notch writing on the whole, and deserves a place on every serious bookshelf as essential reading.

Legends Legends edited by Robert Silverberg

This monumental anthology is a must buy for lovers of high fantasy; you'll want this one in hardcover. After devouring it, you will no doubt then choose to showcase it in an honoured position on your fantasy bookshelf.
