The Swans' War
Readers familiar with my historically based fantasies will be a bit surprised by The One Kingdom. It's much more of a traditional fantasy than the others.

I've long avoided writing anything that could be called "high fantasy" to distinguish myself from the many imitators of Tolkien, but I've always been intrigued by the idea of writing a high fantasy.    Next

The Thief-Taker
I have co-written, with Ian Dennis, the first in a new mystery series called Memoirs of a Bow Street Runner. The first volume was published by Bantam under our joint pen name, T.F. Banks.

The Thief-Taker is set in 1815 on the eve of the battle of Waterloo. The main character is a Bow Street Runner. During those days, the police were semi-private, making their money from rewards for convictions and doing private work for individuals on the side.    Next

World Without End
These books, which I always think of as the four Farrland books (Including Beneath the Vaulted Hills and The Compass of the Soul), grew out of one idea: what if Darwin had set out on his great voyage round the world and instead of discovering one of the cornerstone principles of science had discovered magic?   Next Sea Without a Shore

Beneath the Vaulted Hills
These are prequels to the Moontide and Magic Rise books, set some forty years earlier. Several of the characters from World Without End and Sea Without a Shore appear in these books, though they are much younger. This series tells the story that went before the story, so to speak.   Next The Compass of the Soul

The Initiate Brother
When I began The Initiate Brother (originally called A Journey to Seh) I was looking for a way to write fantasy without producing yet another Tolkien imitation. I was fairly knowledgeable (I mistakenly thought) about the history and literature of Japan and China and decided to set a book in an imaginary Asian world drawn from those sources - just as Tolkien had drawn from Norse sagas and the Finnish Kalevala.    Next Gatherer of Clouds
