It seems everybody has a "Best of the Year" list. The concept of "best" is a relative term since it involves intangible decisions, made at some point in time without measurable criteria. But why let such things stop us? SF Site does these lists each year. Best Read of the Year is compiled by asking our contributors what impressed them most during the year without reference to date of publication. Readers' Choice: Best Read works the same way except we ask you to send us your list. Wayne MacLaurin's Fat Fantasy Awards are a list of what Wayne calls "big fat fantasy". You know the type; massive hardcovers that weigh more than the phone book, and tend to be part of a even bigger series that tests the structural properties of a sturdy bookcase.

This is Year 16 of our annual SF Site's Best Read of the Year: 2012, the SF Site official Best Reading and Top Ten recommendations from everything we read in the previous year. This time you may find it interesting to see the variance in what SF Site Contributors and Readers have been enjoying by comparing the present list with our Readers' Choice Top Ten as chosen by the SF Site readership. I was surprised to see how little overlap there was between the two lists this year. In any case, between both lists, I'm sure you'll find plenty of worthwhile suggestions for further science fiction and fantasy reading.

Here we are at our 15th annual SF Site Readers' Choice Top Ten Books. Every year we ask our readers to vote for their favourite books of the preceding year. What follows below are the results of that voting. It's a banner year for Baen Publishing, with 6 of the top 10 books, including first, second and third choices. Congratulations to Baen, to all the other fine publishers, and to the authors who write the books we so enjoy reading.

The voting results were extremely close this time, which I shall take to mean -- even more so than usual -- that absolutely everything mentioned below is worth seeking out and reading, if you haven't already done so.

Here we are at the SF Site's 13th annual Editors' Choice Best Books of the Year -- our official Best Reading recommendations from everything we read in 2009. As our stable of editors, reviewers, columnists, interviewers, and other contributors continues to grow, our choice of reading material likewise continues to expand. This year it seemed more than ever that there was very little overlap in our reading selections, so the results of our Best of the Year list are even closer than ever.

What follows is the best books of 2009 as chosen by the SF Site readers.

If you'd have talked to Greg in the middle of the year, say August or so, you might have heard him bemoan the state of the year thus far in science fiction, few of the books he'd read by that time had struck him as worthy of inclusion on a best of the year list. But that quickly turned around.

Over the past couple of months, we've been receiving your input on the best of 2008 with interest, and now we're ready to present the results. What follows is the best books of 2008 as chosen by the SF Site readers. It's an interesting list this year and one that Neil feels good about, since there's so much overlap with the Editors' Choice Top 10.

Welcome to the SF Site's 12th annual Editors' Choice Top 10 Best Books of the Year -- our official Best Reading recommendations from 2008! As the votes came in for our official best read of the year, it seemed that our reviewers and other contributors were not reading very much of the same thing -- our tastes and preferences vary widely. In consequence, the results were very close. Nevertheless, I think you'll find that what we've come up with is a set of recommendations that will be sure to please.

Novel Delights in 2008 Novel Delights in 2008
reviewed by Dave Truesdale
Reading and reviewing primarily short fiction for many years, it was a welcome change of pace in 2008 for Dave to find time to once again read more than the odd handful of novels. He read them for pure pleasure, hanging his critical hat on the peg by the door. Realizing that no short story or novel is perfect and has faults, Dave also remembered that to the average genre reader (newcomer or sophisticate), that what may be important to the critical machinery and its practitioners doesn't really matter to the average book buyer. They're in for a good read, and a good read can be experienced in many ways.

2008 may not have been the greatest year ever for science fiction and fantasy, but even in a down year there are plenty of good books to read, and when narrowed down to the choices of a top ten list, the quality and state of SF and fantasy look as good as ever. There are also a couple of trends that appear

Come and see what we consider to be the best of what we read last year, on the SF Site's 11th annual Editors' Choice Top 10 List -- our official SF Site Best SF and Fantasy Books of 2007. Last issue we showed you how you voted on the Readers' Choice Top 10; you may be as surprised as we were to compare the two lists. There's so little overlap it almost seems like the SF Site readers and reviewers aren't reading many of the same books. But this just means that when you look at both lists you'll find even more recommendations for great books to read.

Here we are again, time to dig through a year's worth of reading and try to decide which books belong on the list of personal favorites. All in all, Greg would say 2007 was a very good year, good enough so that the main problem was not in finding enough titles to make the list, but instead the problem was cutting titles that in many other years would have been automatic inclusions.

Best Read of the Year: 2006 SF Site's Readers' Choice: Best Read of the Year: 2006
compiled by Neil Walsh
As many of you know, since mid-December, SF Site has been soliciting your votes for your favourite books of the past year. We had a good rate of participation this year, and some very interesting choices. Thanks to everyone who participated. One suprise is how little overlap there is with the Best Read of the Year: 2006 list. It's almost like we weren't even reading the same books. But the good thing about that is it means there are even more great recommendations to be found by looking through both lists.

SF Site's Best Read of the Year: 2006 SF Site's Best Read of the Year: 2006
compiled by Neil Walsh
This is our 10th annual Top 10 Best Books list. As usual, we have a few surprises in store. The biggest surprise for Neil was our number one best read of 2006 -- but we'll get to that in due time. As many of our long-time readers already know, we can never quite manage to narrow down our Top 10 list to a mere 10 books. Every year the editors, reviewers, interviewers and other contributors to the SF Site are solicited for their top picks, and the results are compiled and amalgamated into this annual list. Because of the way we decided to weigh and calculate the results 10 years ago, we almost inevitably end up with a few ties on the list.

End of the World Blues Best of 2006
complied by Greg L. Johnson
While there may not have been one or two books that obviously stood out from the rest this year, it turned out to be no problem making up a list of ten books that made more memorable reading, worthy of being highly recommended to others. The one problem that did present itself was the nagging realisation that, if this list wasn't expressly limited to print, an intruder from the realm of televised media could have made it onto the list.

2005
Best Read of the Year: 2005 SF Site's Readers' Choice: Best Read of the Year: 2005
compiled by Neil Walsh
In past years, there has frequently been considerable overlap between the SF Site Editors' choices and the Readers' choices for the best books of the year. This time, however, we were surprised to find that the top two books chosen by the SF Site Readership hadn't even made it at all onto the Editors' Choice Top 10. Oh, your top 2 choices received votes from the Contributors and Editors here, but they just didn't make it onto our Best of the Year recommendations -- and not because we don't think they're excellent books. Perhaps it was simply because there was just too much to choose from. At any rate, we're glad the lists are a little different from each other this year, because it gives us an opportunity to highlight an even wider array of great books. Read on to see what you and your fellow SF Site readers considered to be among the best books of 2005.

If you've been an SF Site reader for more than a couple of years, you'll know that our annual Top 10 list is never limited to a mere 10 books. We've never fudged the numbers, which means that we always present ties exactly as they came out in the voting. Usually, however, there is a clear winner in the number one spot -- a runaway lead that leaves everything else far behind. This year was different.

Accelerando Best of 2005
complied by Greg L. Johnson
Getting ready to make his best of the year list, Greg takes all the books he has read in the last year that qualify and pile them on top of one of his bookcases. It gives him a good look at them, and also is a good way to get an overall impression of what kind of year it was for readers of science fiction, fantasy, and all the related fictions that appear in the space of a year. This time, two observations were readily apparent.

Every year we find the SF Site Top 10 Lists to be full of surprises. Every year we find a few great recommendations for books we might otherwise have passed by. 2004 was a good year for science fiction, with more worthwhile titles than will fit comfortably into a top ten list. Still, with the usual caveat that the choices were limited to books I have actually read, here is such a list. None of us can read enough to definitively declare what constitutes the best, but out of what I read this year, these are the books I enjoyed the most and would heartily recommend to readers of science fiction.

"The structure of this list is very simple: it begins with my choice for the five best films of the year, followed by the two most disappointing and the two worst (a film that breaks your heart isn't the same as a film that assaults your sense of taste). Then there is the best DVD of the year, with runners up."

"I have listed my recommendations by author's name, with brief comments that may aid the reader in making selections, as some of the work included is wide-ranging in interest and scope, nor would I expect each work to offer equal attraction to everyone. Nevertheless, I would strongly recommend any of these books, especially to the reader whose interests are varied and open to all the differing riches that fantasy and science fiction represents, and believe that in 2003, these were amongst the best the genre had to offer."

"Such lists are always questionable. In the first place, they presume the compiler has read everything published, which is certainly not true for me, many works that I suspect should have made my list -- Black Projects, White Knights by Kage Baker, The Mount by Carol Emshwiller, amongst others -- remaining unread by year's end. Also, they are always to a degree idiosyncratic, reflecting the reviewer's personal tastes and preferences in reading, rarely comprehensive and usually tending to concentrate upon a specific area of genre, be it traditional epic or cross-genre and slipstream."

A couple of notes about my picks. I didn't read much SF this year, but I also didn't, in my casual browsing, find much SF that looked like it deserved to be read. I have also included two reprints at #9 and #10 that, if first published in 2002, would have been #1 and #2 respectively. (The re-release by Old Earth Books of Edward Whittemore's classic magic realism novels set in the Middle East still ranks as the literary event of the year.) My one regret this year is not having a chance to dive into new work by Steve Aylett, one of our most talented writers.
