New Arrivals
compiled by Neil Walsh

This page shows you what's new from Greg Bear, Justina Robson, Katharine Kerr, and many others, plus a peek at some books that will be published over the next few months.

Before we get to the brand, sparkling new stuff, here are a couple of recommendations from my own reading:

  • The Skrayling Tree by Michael Moorcock (Warner Aspect, hc, 330 pages, February 2003, USA & Canada)
Subtitled "The Albino in America," this novel, like The Dreamthief's Daughter (2001), is a continuation of the original Elric Saga, published in various incarnations from the 1960s on. Of course, by "continuation" I don't mean a sequential continuance, but rather a further deepening of our understanding of the inseparably intertwined knots that are the heroic tales of the multiverse. The Skrayling Tree is a novel that oozes the same dreamlike sap as Moorcock's previous Albino adventures, with flavours you'll recognize from European and North American mythology. If you enjoy the utterly fantastical in your fantasy, Moorcock's distillation is a sweet syrup indeed.
  • The Portrait of Mrs. Charbuque by Jeffrey Ford (William Morrow, hc, 310 pages, 2002, USA & Canada)
In 1890s New York, a talented painter paints portraits for the rich and powerful. Just as he is beginning to feel like his creativity is being stifled by this prostitution of his talent, along comes the most curious and most challenging commission of his career: paint a portrait of someone he is permitted neither to see nor to have described to him. Like the narrator, the reader becomes increasingly obsessed with the mystery surrounding Mrs. Charbuque until it becomes a real effort to put the book aside. Highly recommended reading.
