New Arrivals
compiled by Neil Walsh

Some of the highlights passing through the SF Site office at the moment include the latest from Raymond E. Feist, Whitley Strieber, Jennifer Fallon, Chelsea Quinn Yarbro, plus new editions of classics from Carol Emshwiller, Howard Waldrop, Robert A. Heinlein, and new collections from some of the best anthologists in the business, like Jack Dann & Gardner Dozois, Stephen Jones, and Ellen Datlow & Terri Windling.

Of the latest new arrivals, this is the one that landed on my personal reading desk:

  • Carmen Dog by Carol Emshwiller (Peapod Classics, Small Beer Press, trade, 150 pages, September 2006)
The premise of Emshwiller's first novel (originally published in 1990) is that women are beginning to devolve into animals, while animals are meanwhile acquiring human-like sentience and transforming into women. The story follows Pooch, a dog/woman who rescues a human child from its mother/snapping-turtle and runs away into a mostly hostile world full of evolving/devolving women, and men who mostly seem to want to have sex with them all. Somehow, in her efforts to save the baby, survive on the streets, and escape from male-dominated tyranny (sexual and otherwise), Pooch ends up singing in the opera. This is an extremely clever feminist satire, narrated in a somewhat aloof style that frequently serves to heighten the humorous aspects of the tale. Worthy of this handsome new edition, and well worth your time -- highly recommended.
