MaryAnn Harris

I have a great affection for vintage fashion, but I'm no longer in the business. With all the recent changes in publishing, I now focus on things related to the writing biz. That's just fine, but there are things I miss from my vintage days - especially the women who sold me their beautiful garments and shared stories about wearing them. I also miss the artsy gals who came to shop from my collection. Thanks for that! If you want to keep in the vintage news loop, check out my Ottawa Vintage Fashion News group on Facebook.

I left the Antique Market in December 2008, but here are pictures of my booth from days gone by.

What Makes Vintage Clothing Special

Vintage wear guarantees originality. The chances that someone else will be wearing the same outfit are virtually nil, so vintage is wonderful for festive occasions and ensures that you stand out from the crowd.

For day-to-day wear, team up vintage pieces with modern apparel to create a look all your own: vintage sweaters with jeans, a vintage jacket with your favourite skirt, a vintage dress with a modern belt... Use your imagination. The possibilities are endless!

For thrifty shoppers, price alone should be incentive enough to shop vintage. Amazing bargains can be had for quality vintage wear - from dresses, sweaters, lingerie and coats - to funky handbags, hats, footwear, accessories, buttons and a whole lot more.

And don't forget jewellery, ranging from fine antique jewellery to quality rhinestone pins, bakelite, lucite and chunky '60s plastics. There are so many different styles and eras to choose from that you're sure to find something to suit you.

Lastly, shopping vintage is friendly to the planet. By indulging your passion for vintage fashion, you keep these articles out of the landfill. Give yourself a pat on the back for that!
