Coming Attractions

As this issue prepared to go press, the members of the African Speculative Fiction Society announced their short list for the 2018 Nommo Awards. The finalists for short story include "The Regression Test" by Wole Talabi, which originally appeared in our January/February 2017 issue. F&SF stories written by Cat Hellisen and Dare Segun Falowo also made the organization's long list. You can find out more at www.africansfs.com. We congratulate all the nominees.

This year marks the 101st anniversary of Russia's October Revolution and the founding of the world's first socialist state, so in our next issue, Harry Turtledove gives us an alternate history of Red California and considers whether one person is truly "Powerless." Cassandra Khaw and Jonathan Howard team up to offer "Shooting Iron," which introduces Jenny Lim, a cowgirl you won't soon forget. And Yukimi Ogawa returns to our pages with "Taste of Opal," a fantasy adventure that's unlike anything we've read in a long time. The issue also includes science fiction from Brian Trent and Gregor Hartmann, humor from Sarina Dorie, and some writers new to these pages, like Jeremiah Tolbert and Susan Emshwiller. You won't want to miss it.
