Just so it doesn't escape notice at the end of the column:

When this article was commissioned, it included a $100 payment. When Ms. Lyons turned in the article, she said, "As to the $100, please donate it to the magazine and if you find a good one, use it to help pay for another story from Marta Randall! I think "Lazaro y Antonio" is just about my all-time favorite story in F&SF."

With Marta Randall's blessing, we are instead going to give the $100 to the next newbie woman writer who sells us a story.

did read the ScienceFictionBiology blogspot brief article with interest.

To whom was the $100 payment turned donation turned grant ultimately awarded, and for what work?

The first donation of $100 went to one of the contributors in the Dec. 2009 issue. I think it was Alexandra Duncan but it might have been Sarah Thomas . . . no, I checked and it was Alexandra Duncan, for her story "Bad Matter."

Susan Lyons subsequently donated another $100 and that went to Kali Wallace for her story in the current issue, "Botanical Exercises for Curious Girls."
