kindle version cover problems

Something is wrong with the formatting of the last two issues of the magazine. The cover is no longer shown in cover mode, although it can be seen from within the magazine. The March/April 2017 issue is the last one with the cover showing as it is supposed to.

Please correct this as soon as possible. I understand there is a mechanism to issue a revised version via Amazon to correct this, so I look forward to seeing the covers in the directory. I am sure you should have this sorted out before the September/October issue.

While we're on the subject, the Weightless Books .MOBI edition of the July/August issue does not have a working table of contents.

Thank you for bringing these problems to our attention. We may have follow-up questions if we have can't reproduce the exact issues you're having, but we'll let you know if we do. We really appreciate your support of F&SF in new formats.

SHamm: How do you view the MOBI version (i.e. on a Kindle, a PC, an iPhone)? I'd like to know to see if I can get the same results.

The MOBI version should be readable on a Kindle or in the Kindle app, assuming that it is not encrypted. In fact the version distributed Amazon for Kindles is MOBI formatted.

RTurner: I'm reading the Weightless .MOBI file on a Kindle Fire HD. When I swipe from the left to get a TOC, the only options on display are "Cover," "Table of Contents," and "Fantasy & Science Fiction Table of Contents." "Cover" gives me a tiny B&W thumbnail (alas) and the other two take me, obviously, to the TOC, which is plain text, not hyperlinked.

The only way I can navigate to the individual stories is to do a search on the title or the author's name.

Thanks for any assistance you can offer!

SHamm: Interesting. Is that true of back-issues or only the current issue? As I note in my original post, there was a change after the March/April issue, so your problem might have started then as well.

I have no problem using the ToC on my Kindle wth the Amazon version of the issues, so perhaps the Weightless version is different. You might want to see how the Amazon version works for you. If I recall correctly you can order from Amazon and cancel without charge if you are not satisfied.

It seems to me that that problem could only be attributed to an attack on the site using malware.

To create a subscription MOBI file, Amazon requires a XML file link to retrieve all of the files needed to create an issue. It pulls them in, creating a MOBI file with a B&W cover. I download an unencrypted copy for the the archives, the single issue sales on Amazon and, more recently, for Weightless to retrieve for their site. Weightless and Amazon use the same file unless Amazon makes further MOBI changes (which I doubt).

WRT the table of contents, my two vintage Kindles (one with a keyboard and the other with side buttons) are able to view the ToC and navigate to each item there. It's apparent to me that Amazon uses different MOBI engines depending upon the OS/ereader.

A change was made for the May/June 2017 MOBI issue whereby the digital version now follows the page sequence of the paper magazine rather than the order listed in the paper version's table of contents.

I am pleased to report that the cover problem has been corrected in the September/OCtober issue. I regret to note that the May/June and July/August issues still have the cove probem. Please issue a correction to Amazon for these two issues, since it appears you have located and corrected the problem.

Received the Sept/Oct issue from Weightless and am sad to report that for the second month in a row, there is no working table of contents in the .MOBI edition. I'm reading on a Kindle Fire HDX (see upthread).

I would really like to throw Weightless the business, but in the absence of a hyperlinked TOC, navigation is an onerous process. If the problem can't be fixed, I'll go back to Amazon when my current sub expires.

Here we go again! After Sept/Oct and Nov/Dec with proper covers showing the Jan/Feb issue is NOT displaying a cover! I thought this was sorted out, why is this problem returning?

I read F&SF on a Kindle paperwhite, and I am having the same issue with the cover. (Not that I consider it a big deal, because even at full size, Kindle covers are only in B&W.)

I just got around to checking out the March/April issue and regret to inform you that once again the cover is not properly displayed on my kindle. Looking back there have been problems as early as May 2017 with the only issues since March 2017 displaying properly are September 2017 and November 2017.

Please correct this problem as it is annoying to see a text display of the issue name and date instead of the cover you invested resources in to create for each issue.

dhdurgee, We really appreciate your note. Can you tell us which version of the Kindle or which Kindle app/device you're using? We've worked with Amazon to try to resolve this problem and the full color cover shows up on the Kindle device that I'm currently using. So we're wondering if it's a version problem or something else. We want to duplicate the problem so we can identify it. Thanks again for letting us know about this, and for helping us figure out where the problem is.

I am reading on my Kindle Touch 2, which is a paper white display. As you are seeing a full color cover I can only assume you are on a kindle fire.

I can see the cover from within the issue, but in the kindle directory of issues I don't see the cover when I am displaying cover mode. So it seems as if the issue is missing whatever they pull the cover for their cover mode directory display.

Issues I can see the cover on are January, March, September and November 2017 as well as May, July, September 2016 respectively. Issues I cannot see the cover for are January, March 2018 plus May and July, 2017 and March, 2016.

If you need more information please let me know.

I don't have a final analysis yet, but it seems that there is something strange with the issues that have cover problems. Just for a check, I downloaded those issues to my laptop to transfer via USB to my KT2 and found that the issues that Amazon had sent directly to my KT2 were bigger. I deleted the Amazon versions after copying them to my laptop for further inspection and then copied the downloaded issues over. The downloaded issues do not have cover problems.

So in the worst case I have a work-around for any issue with problems. Hopefully I will be able to let you know later what is different about the issues with problems.

I just heard back on the issues with cover problems:

"Interestingly, the 'bad' issues display the title image not the cover with my Quicklook plugin too. Now to look inside....

And it turns out to be very simple. The 'bad' issues are missing the EXTH fields that give the offset to the cover image. Have you tried re-downloading them to your Kindle directly? Perhaps the error has been fixed, and only appears in issues downloaded very soon after release."

I have not tried to download again on the kindle, as I already have them side-loaded. So it appears there was a defect in the original push of these issues to my kindle. As the side-loaded copies do not have this problem, it might have been corrected.

I don't know what checks you go through when releasing an issue, perhaps this can be caught in the future by inspection.

Today I found that I had received the May 2018 issue on my kindle touch 2 and that once again the cover was bad. I deleted that issue and attempted to sync and receive a replacement copy. This did not work. I went to Amazon on my laptop and requested a copy of the issue be delivered to my kindle touch 2. When this issue arrived the cover was OK. So it appears that something is causing a problem with copies pushed to my KT2 at times. I can work around this by deleting the issue and downloading a fresh copy from Amazon on my laptop.

Thank you for your continued help in figuring this out and for the detailed reporting on the problem. We're sorry that it continues for you but are glad there's a workaround until a more permanent solution can be found.

Here we go again. Once again my July issue arrived without a cover image. I deleted it and went to Amazon to request it be downloaded again.

This time it seems to be an even bigger problem than with prior issues. When I goto my subscription and click on "deliver past issue" the view of issues shows no cover there either for the July issue! Instead of the cover there is a notice of "no image available" there. So I was not surprised when the issue arrived without a cover after I requested it.

Something strange is still going on with your Amazon publication.
