Kit Reed was a prolific short story writer and F&SF contributor. Her first published story was 'The Wait' in F&SF April 1958.

Her most recent contribution to F&SF was 'The Blight Family Singers' in December 2009.

My personal favourite Kit Reed story is 'Biodad' from the November 2006 Asimov's.

She also has a story in the most recent issue of Asimov's.

    She will be missed.

I was startled to realize how many memorable stories were written by Kit Reed. I don't know when I first read The Wait but it made such an impression, I've never forgotten it. Amazing it was her first story. It's available online, incidentally.

The April '58 F&SF was a great issue -- Kelly Freas's indelible cover art, "The Grantha Sighting" by Avram Davidson, Reed's "The Wait," "A Deskful of Girls" by Leiber, and "Poor Little Warrior!" by Aldiss.
