    I second Dave's comment, Gordon. Thanks for posting it. There's got to be a better word than "blogger" to describe the "Eric" who researched and wrote the piece.

    Try Asimov's New Guide to Science.

    In it he talks about everything including how the Lorentz - FitzGerald equations make FTL travel impossible and how Einstein used those equations to show that E=mc^2.

    A good popular history of the War of 1812 and the creation of the American national anthem is given in "The Dawn's Early Light" by Walter Lord.
