Obituary: Chris Croughton

British fan Chris “Keris” Croughton (b.1956) was killed in an head-on collision on November 10. Keris was active in the filk community from 1991, often running sound boards. In addition, Keris was a musician and a founding member of the n’Early Music Consort. Keris was inducted into the Filk Hall of Fame as part of the class of 2007.

Clarkesworld Book Sale

Clarkesworld, which was a bookstore before it was a magazine, has announced that it will be selling some of its still-extant stock in a short term sale ending on November 19. There is a $40 minimum purchase with $3.50 shipping and, according to Neil Clarke, all proceeds will go to fund the magazine.

Obituary: Margaret Field

Actress Margaret Field (b.1923) died on November 6 following a six year battle with cancer. Field appeared in the films The Man from Planet X, Night Has a Thousand Eyes, and Captive Women. She also made appearances on The Twilight Zone and Science Fiction Theatre. Field’s daughter is actress Sally Field.

In Time Lawsuit Settlement

Harlan Ellison’s lawsuit against New Regency and director Andrew Niccol over plagiarism for their film In Time has been settled. Ellison claimed that In Time was based on his 1965 story “Repent, Harlequin! Said The Ticktockman.” Ellison’s original lawsuit asked that all copies of the film be destroyed, its release stopped, and he be paid compensatory damages. The settlement calls for the film’s release to go ahead with an on-screen credit for Ellison.

Yet Another Asteroid Visits Earth

Asteroid 2005 YU55 is scheduled to pass within approximately 201,700 miles of the Earth on November 8, closer than the Moon’s orbit but further away than many other recent asteroid passes. However, 2005 YU55 is 1,300 feet across, making it the largest asteroid to pass the Earth since 1976, although it doesn’t pose any danger. The next known large asteroid to pass near Earth won’t happen until 2028.

Obituary: Les Daniels

Author Les Daniels (b.1943) died from an heart attack on November 5. Daniels has written five historical novels about the vampire Don Sebastian de Villanueva. In addition to his fiction, Daniels has written about the history of comics.

Gulliver Travel Grant Awarded

The Speculative Literature Foundation (SLF) has announced the winner of the 2011 Gulliver Travel Grant is Ibi Zoboi. The grant offers Zoboi $800 which she will use to travel to Haiti and the Dominican Republic to research a YA dystopian novel set in both countries.

Terry Martin has announced that British series anthology Murky Depths would cease publication with the publication of issue 18. The first issue of Murky Depths appeared in 2007. Murky Depths had provided a mix of prose and comics in a glossy format.
