Fantastiknovelltävlingen Winners

The winners of the thirteen annual Fantastiknovelltävlingen, a short story contest run by the Swedish e-mail list SKRIVA with support from the writers group Novellmästarna, have been announced. The winners share a €200 prize.

  • 1st prize “Hemliga lådan,” by Robin Karlsson (“The Secret Box”)
  • 2nd prize “Tvättstugan,” by Jonas Lejon (“The Laundry Room”)
  • 3rd prize “Inbjudningskortet,” by Patrik Centerwall (“The Invitation Card”)

SMOFCon Scholarships from CANSMOF

CANSMOF has announced that Danielle MacDonald (Ontario, Canada) and James Shields (County Meath, Ireland) are the receipients of this year’s SMOFCon scholarships. Both recipients will receive aid to attend this year’s SMOFCon in Philadelphia, PA and are required to write a report about the event for CANSMOF.

Obituary: Gary Collins

Actor Gary Collins (b.1938) died on October 13. Collins may be best known as a television talk show host and multiple host of the Miss America Pageant, but he also had a length career as an actor, with genre appearances in The Six Millions Dollar Man, The Bionic Woman, Tales of the Unexpected, and Watchers Reborn.

Skydiving Record Set

Austrian skydiver Felix Baumgartner set a new world’s record for highest skydive, leaping from a balloon at an altitude of 128,000. He broke the record set by Joseph Kittinger on August 16, 1960. Kittinger, who worked as an advisor to Baumgartner, had jumped from 102,800 feet. During the jump, Baumgartner also because the first human to break the sound barrier without the use of a jet, achieving that feat on the 65th anniversary of Chuck Yeager becoming the first human to break the sound barrier. Baumgartner’s leap was sponsored by Red Bull Energy Drink.

James Gunn’s Ad Astra Launches

The first issue of James Gunn’s Ad Astra, a new annual journal of science fiction, reviews, and criticism, has been published. This year’s theme was Communication and Information and includes articles by Jean Asselin, Sheila Finch, and Victor Grech. Fiction includes stories by Peter Charron, Eric Cline, Shaenon K. Garrity, Adria Laycraft, Nikki J. North, and Adrian Simmons. The theme for the 2013 issue has not yet been announced.

E-Book Bundle For Charity

Eight authors, including Cory Doctorow, Mercedes Lackey, Paolo Bacigalupi, Lauren Beukes, Kelly Link, John Scalzi, Neil Gaiman, and Dave McKean, are offering up a bundle of e-books. The books are available in DRM-Free versions for a donation which will go to the authors and a variety of charities. Six books by the first five authors are available to anyone making a donation. Two additional books by Scalzi and Gaiman & McKean are available to anyone who donates more than the average donation at the time of purchase. The titles included are Doctorow’s Pirate Cinema, Lackey’s Invasion, Bacigalupi’s Pump Six, Beukes’s Zoo City, and Link’s Stranger Things Happen and Magic for Beginners. The addition books are Scalzi’s Old Man’s War and Gaiman & McKean’s Signal to Noise. The charities being helped include the SFWA Emergency Medical Fund, the Electronic Frontier Foundation, and Child’s Play Charity.

Star Wars at the Louvre

The Louvre Museum in Paris is hosting an exhibit on Star Wars memorabilia through March 17. The exhibit spotlights the collection of Arnaud Grunberg, a toy collector who has loaned 450 items, ranging from action figures to light sabres. The exhibit also includes scenes recreated from the movies using action figures. Grunberg began his collection after he saw Star Wars in 1977, when he was 11.

The African American Arts Alliance of Chicago has announced the nominees for the 12th Annual Black Excellence Awards. This year’s nominees includes a science fiction novel in the fiction category.
