Orion Mission Successful

The first flight of Orion, delayed a day, successfully launched, orbited, and splashed down on Friday, December 5. Orion completed two orbits of the Earth, including one at a distance of 3600 miles, more than 15 times higher than the International Space Station orbits. This is the first time a spaceship designed for humans has traveled that far from Earth since the Apollo missions. A little over four hours after launch, Orion splashed down in the Pacific Ocean.

Librarian Wanted: UC Riverside

The University of California-Riverside is looking for an Associate Librarian or Librarian to fill the new position of Jay Kay and Doris Klein Science Fiction Librarian in Special Collections & University Archives, which was recently endowed by a grant from the estate of Jay Kay Klein. The position will be responsible for all aspects of the development, stewardship, and promotion of the Eaton Collection of Science Fiction and Fantasy. The application period runs through January 26, 2015, but applicants are advised to submit their materials by January 19.

Rotsler Goes to Mason

English fan Sue Mason has been named the winner of the 2014 Rotsler Award for best fan artist. Mason has previously been won the Hugo Award twice and has been active in Plokta, She has won the Nova seven times. Some of her work may be seen in the chapbook I Want to Be a Celtic Death Goddess When I Grow Up. The Rotsler Award is sponsored by the Southern California Institute for Fan Interests. Established in 1998, the award carries an honorarium of US$300. Claire Brialey, Mike Glyer, and John Hertz served as this year’s judges.

Obituary: Rocky Wood

New Zealand author Rocky Wood (b.1959) died on December 1. Wood was one of the world’s foremost experts on the writings of Stephen King, publishing at least five volumes on King’s works and collecting. Wood worked as a researcher for King on King’s novel Doctor Sleep. Wood was currently serving as the President of the Horror Writers Association and had been diagnosed with ALS in 2010.
